Atlantic DataStream – an open access platform for sharing water quality data
Across Canada diverse monitoring programs led by governments, researchers, communities, and watershed organizations are generating valuable information to track and understand freshwater health. When this data is brought together it can generate powerful insights into environmental impacts and change at spatial and temporal scales beyond the scope of any one monitoring initiative alone. However, finding ways to effectively connect information from different sources in consistent, reuseable formats is a persistent challenge. In this presentation, we will discuss how Atlantic DataStream – an open access platform for sharing water and sediment quality data – brings data together at local and regional-scales using consistent data and metadata formats that promote data access and reuse. Launched in 2018, Atlantic DataStream now houses over 6 million unique water quality monitoring observations published by more than 100 different monitoring organizations.
